I just discovered https://axi.chat @axichat, a messenger that supports both #XMPP and #email with one identity and thus can chat with both #Conversations and #DeltaChat contacts. File sharing, reactions, replies are all there. No OMEMO yet. All free software, the app is on #fdroid and the scripts to setup your own axichat server is on their GitHub. It also has a calendar built-in, they seem to use a server combined of #ejabberd and #stalwart, so I guess the #caldav server came for free.

• #Zulip
• #XMPP
• #IRC

• #Mattermost

I'd rather DIY a "chat" client in #bash based off curl & enc and use ntfy as Server than ever touching discord again.

• Cuz it's the worst of them all:
  • Wasteful as #MicrosoftTeams
  • Loosing chat History like #Lack
  • Uglier than 2006 mIRC
  • And it has worse image quality than #WebCall on an ADSL line and worse Audio than an #Iridium-call and #Mumble with #Codec2 @ 1200bit/s.

Monocles, a #Conversations_im fork, is now making heavy use of LLM-generated code. Including its cryptography.

Meanwhile it hasn't backported critical security fixes that landed in Conversations (and other forks) over a year ago.

Use this information however you like.

In other news: Conversations is currently free of charge on both F-Droid and Google Play.

#jabberEl ≥ 0.13.0 does support message threads now! Second #Jabber client I'm aware of supporting this feature. The other is @cheogram.

It's already in #Debian #backports:

I hope, threads will be supported by @gajim and @movim, too, some day. Let's see.

• IRC & XMPP exist for decades and are supported on everything that can do TCP/IP and 80×25 MDA output.
• Mumble does Voicechats way better.
• Jitsi Meet does Videochats even better.
• Even with all the enshittification, Zulip & RocketChat are way better options.

Even a Mailinglist is better than Discord, because the latter one is an information blackhole that actively prevents archiving and searching.

• I'd rather self-host all of the above than ever touching discord!
  • There's a spechal place in hell for people who abuse discord as replacement for ticketing systems (instead of i.e. Zammad), git, MkDocs & ntfy.sh…
  • It's even worse than Microsoft Teams & Skype!!!

Lazyness is NEVER an argument against proper tech!

• And #discord isn't even #accessible.

We are attending #IETF126 in Vienna. The #XMPP community is represented at the Hackathon and we are hosting a side meeting on Thursday at 15:00 (Park Suite 4) to introduce the idea of bringing XMPP 2.0 back to the IETF.
