for mega-yonks i have avidly followed heapsa hashtags [as a linux user & enjoyer] plus various tags [as someone somewhat bsd-curious but quite overwhelmed by it conceptually & practically]. am now thinking of unfollowing said bsd tags, coz seeing all the posts from all the clever peeps using it with all their incomprehensible commands & concepts, rather than inspiring me is kinda sorta more demoralising & overwhelming me

also, there's just no point me ignoring the fact that i bloody well love using my various linux systems, & hafta be honest with myself that the chances of me ever seriously embarking on learning then using another paradigm now are pretty damn slender

so, unfollowing said bsd tags seems logical & pragmatic

                  and yet...

...it also feels cowardly & lazy

ergo ever more i continue walking around in an endless circle on a cold distant planet, locked in a logic loop, the very robot of which asimov wrote

I continue to be appalled at the flagrant violation of all that is decent and good about modern software by those reprobates. This time it is . The upgrade from 7.8 to 7.9 took two commands (`sysupgrade -R 7.9` and `pkg_add -Uu`) and "just worked".

Damnit stuff is meant to break! I'm meant to then have a fun afternoon reading the source code and picking the boot sector apart with tweezers so I can fix it! But no. No fun for me. The developers hate me.

We first experienced Xfce quite a while ago (late 1990s when it was new) and after spending a while with KDE and other things instead we settled back into Xfce. It gets the job done and that's what matters.

Also I think I'll put in an option for "no graphical environment" because surely there are users who prefer only sparing use of graphical applications. I wonder, has anyone ever written a command-line only method for, like...launching X11 applications that does some horrible trick like using libsvga and acting as its own X server

Gotta be honest. Not sure exactly when the change occurred but I realized something within the last day or two: the sparkle's back. is FUN again. I feel like has been a vital component of that rediscovery: it feels more like what really got me into programming in the first place, being able to use the SDSU Sparc stations. As a drab ordinary user I learned to love the Macintosh, but as a programmer I learned to...respect UNIX. Not love it, but I realized at least that there was a value to its style and it felt better for programming.

But that was something about the Macintosh: it offered that option. I never really got into MPW but I knew about it. It was a funky sort of command-line approach to Mac programming. It had that classic Mac weirdness, like it was weird in a good and useful way rather than weird as a calculated commercial thing the way Steve Jobs (bites thumb in his direction) wanted Apple to be.

And he got his way, the slimy conniving piece of [expletive deleted].

Three years later, I am proud to say that the BSD Cafe is sailing at full speed towards the uncertain horizons of the modern world.

We are here among friends who share interests and passions, without geography or borders, apart from those defined by mutual respect.

Your Barista is more energised than ever.

He also had to withdraw from BSDCan, with enormous regret, but he is now ready for EuroBSDCon. And for other new things that will gradually follow.

For example, here is a small preview: I have been experimenting with MeshCore.

My dream? One or more BSD Cafe services that do not use the Internet at all. I already have a few ideas, so I shall not disclose anything more for now 😉

And I will never grow tired of repeating that the BSD Cafe is a success because of you.

I am just the Barista, but a place like this is nothing without the friends sitting at the bar. And the friends of this bar are wonderful people who, every day, help make my days calmer, happier and more interesting.

So thank you for these three years, and thank you for being here.
