Protecting children online is an objective we all share. The challenge is ensuring measures strengthen child safety without weakening the privacy and security millions of people rely on every day, including children. As organisations committed to a safe, secure, and rights-respecting internet, we are concerned by suggestions that the Government restrict virtual private networks (VPNs). VPNs are cybersecurity tools. They help people protect personal information on public Wi-Fi, enable secure remote working, allow students to access education networks safely, and help small businesses protect their systems. VPNs are essential for human rights defenders and journalists, domestic abuse survivors, the LGBTQ+ community, and others at heightened risk online. The evidence does not support assumptions that young people use VPNs to bypass age restrictions. Ofcom’s research found that only around 3% of children had used VPNs to access content meant for older audiences. Evidence from Australia shows children are much more likely to get around age checks by not being asked, giving false information, or even drawing on a moustache. Restricting VPNs would undercut the security and privacy of millions, without making children safer. Age-gating VPNs would require everyone to surrender sensitive personal information simply to access tools designed to protect privacy. If your website blanket bans IP addresses and/or doesn’t allow aliased email addresses, go fuck yourself. You’re feeding the anti-privacy beast that is destroying the internet right now. You’re literally helping Google, Meta, and Amazon strip us of the one space that we still have the ability to have a smidge of privacy in our lives. Your excuses are bullshit, you run the space, take care of your own security and privacy concerns, don’t pass them on to your us.

Look to @musicbrainz (and @metabrainz as a whole) if you need an example of a community that has mysteriously managed to refrain from insisting their users expose their private identity, despite currently being the main source for online music metadata. [^1] All the data is entered by users, some who’re entirely anonymous, and yet the database continues to be a functional and useful contribution to digital media. Looking at you @Wikipedia and @rateyourmusic .

Find another way to combat bad actors, because this ain’t it. One suggestion I have is to take advantage of already existing tools and require user accounts if folks want to edit with a VPN [^2]. That way you can punish bad actors by banning their accounts and stop punishing accounts in good standing for doing nothing wrong. You can even give new accounts limited usage until they’ve proven themselves (something MB does as well).

Stop this shit, or hey at least stop acting like you’re part of a free internet if you’re just going to do the work of the corpo fucks. Thanks.
