Linux:

Here's a brain teaser for 'ya: if software engineers aren't taught how to recognize energy-efficient code, how can they be expected to write it? Do they even know what green code looks like?

I started asking myself this after reading this study that ranks a list of common languages by energy efficiency via a bunch of different tests: sciencedirect.com/science/arti

I'm not completely sold on the scientific basis of this study since there aren't really formally accepted techniques to produce "green" code, so each algo tested is really just an attempt to find the most common implementation, or one person's opinion of what the implementation should be, but it got me wondering:

how the hell anyone could even know whether they were writing energy efficient code? The compiler doesn't tell you. Peak memory and DRAM can make a program seem efficient even if it isn't.

Big winners on this list probably come as no surprise. C and Rust are some of the most efficient, all interpreted languages are less efficient by a wide margin.

Kinda makes me wonder if there needs to be language dialects that actually make this issue more visible.

What would that even look like? Green C? A green compiler? A test suite that tracks energy usage?

This seems like a weirdly untapped are of the software engineering practice, and a huge missed opportunity.
