¿Sabían que el gestor de descargas uGet no nació con ese nombre, sino bajo una identidad completamente distinta orientada al entorno de escritorio GNOME?

A principios de los años 2000, el software libre buscaba herramientas ligeras para competir con las opciones privativas de Windows. Fue en 2003 cuando el desarrollador Raymond Huang creó la primera versión de este programa bajo el nombre de UrlGfe. La aplicación original estaba programada de forma estricta con la biblioteca gráfica GTK+, buscando ser una alternativa limpia, directa y sin consumo excesivo de memoria para los usuarios de sistemas GNU/Linux. Durante sus primeros cinco años de vida, el proyecto mantuvo esa denominación que hacía referencia directa a las funciones de capturar enlaces web.

La verdadera transformación del proyecto ocurrió a mediados de 2008. Al notar que la interfaz gráfica necesitaba una renovación completa para adaptarse a los estándares modernos y facilitar su uso a un público más amplio, los encargados del desarrollo decidieron reescribir parte del código. Con la llegada de la versión 1.0.0, el programa abandonó para siempre el nombre de UrlGfe y se bautizó formalmente como uGet. Este cambio de identidad sirvió como trampolín para que la aplicación dejara de ser un secreto exclusivo de Linux y se convirtiera con los años en un gestor multiplataforma capaz de funcionar de manera nativa en Windows, BSD y dispositivos Android, manteniendo intacta su filosofía de ser un software libre, liviano y sin publicidad añadida.
