Power use testing. Some surprising findings:

My modern gaming PC with a huge GPU only draws 85 Watts (W) in basic usage (many tabs open, using the computer). A modern laptop is more like 10 W, but I'll test that too.

A 9 year old i7 desktop only takes 20W to rickroll, tinny speaker included.

15 year old desktop is power hungry: 70W to idle when the i7 idles at 10W.

20 year old 22 inch Dell monitor refuses to die. I was worried I should it and start "saving" money on a new monitor with lower power consumption. Economically, that doesn't seem to make sense. It uses 18W, seemingly about what many 24 inch monitors use today. Some laptop screens definitely use less Watts. There's a lesson: there is "embodied carbon" in old devices that is already spent making and shipping them. Extending the life of old machines can be better for the environment than buying a new "more efficient" model. (This is not always true: EVs are much better for the environment than ICE cars.)

The i7 drew half the power in a full desktop in lightweight than it did in the BIOS with almost everything unplugged (e.g. fans).

I'll clean up the notes at some point.

Data: $10 smart plugs made by , a small Chinese company.

Sometimes when I update the kernel of one of my hypervisor nodes, the CPU usage will go from ~5% to ~20%. The only fix has been powering down for 5 to 10 seconds and then starting the system up manually. I think it has to do with firmware (redline in pic below). Anyone have any thoughts? No errors in log, just more CPU usage, it's weird.

: is running pretty well on my T480. Big picture mode on. controller connected via USB. Tried some games (2D). This is very nice.

The laptop offers Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. In theory, I could connect an EGPU for more power. But I think it's not necessary for the moment. I am happy that Linux works right out of the gate just fine. It's Arch Linux, and it's known for not being too beginner-friendly. Well, I am a beginner ... ;-)

I discovered that GNOME on my laptop is nothing short of an amazing Zen. On my desktop with a secondary monitor to the left of the main one, it feels very much less than ideal, but the different layout and interaction model that Cinnamon has the same no-thought-needed interaction.

Also Debian requires more work for gaming than Mint, but they're both equally amazing for different reasons.
