"WEI wasn't an effort to level the playing field between apps and the web – it was a race to the bottom, an attempt to make the web as enshittogenic as the app hellscape.

Public outrage to WEI killed the project, but Google's commitment to augmenting its illegal commercial lockdown efforts with technical lockdowns never ended. Now, Google has rolled out an experimental "reCAPTCHA Mobile Verification" that uses an app, your camera, and your device's TPM or secure enclave to produce an attestation about your Android device:
    (...)
This will make it much easier for the apps and other services you interact with to block your device if you run an Android alternative, or if you install a mod that overrides the actions of Google's stock Android:
    (...)
This is a terrible idea – it's every bit as bad as WEI was. In an age in which Big Tech is ever-more tied to authoritarian governments, redesigning our devices to tell strangers things we don't want them to know isn't just shortsighted, it's inexcusable."

We wrote an honest comparison of Zerion against Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Threema, Wire, Session, Cwtch and Tox.

Honest meaning: Signal gets credit for pioneering post-quantum key exchange, Cwtch is genuinely close in spirit, and each app is the right call for some threat model.

Where Zerion stands alone: post-quantum encryption on every single message, and everything (including calls) over Tor.

Musify is an open-source Android music app that lets you stream music, listen offline, view lyrics, and create playlists without ads or subscriptions.

It supports SponsorBlock, includes a built-in equalizer, is available on F-Droid, and lets you import or export your data.

A great privacy-friendly alternative to mainstream music streaming apps.

what's a good fediverse android app that would make it easier for someone coming from things like Facebook/Instagram/etc that works with snac2? I want to try to get my wife to use my snac instance too and let her explore the fediverse some, but she might not like the web interface that I use.

I've used Tusky before, and I know that works with snac, but I'm not sure if there might be some better options with a good, user-friendly UI. If there's anything that shows "Favorites" as a thumbs up, or Boosts as "Share", might make for an easier transition.

Qualcomm Dragonwing Mobile Broadband Multimedia (MBM) MBM715 and MBM 415 SoCs combine 5G, Wi-Fi, multimedia, and Edge AI

Qualcomm has introduced the Dragonwing Mobile Broadband Multimedia (MBM) family, a new lineup of 4-nm SoCs that integrate 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi, multimedia processing, and on-device AI into a single platform for “interactive broadband” devices. The family currently features the top-tier Dragonwing MBM715 and the lower-cost Dragonwing MBM415, designed for smart displays, retail kiosks, service terminals, and other connected devices that require both high-speed connectivity and local processing. Unlike mobile broadband (MBB) or fixed wireless access (FWA) platforms, the MBM series combines connectivity, display, camera, and AI into one chip, so no separate processor is needed. Qualcomm Dragonwing MBM715 & MBM415 Specifications: The MBM415 has no dedicated on-device Generative AI engine, but Qualcomm officially brands the MBM415’s modem-side processing as “Qualcomm AI-Enhanced Signal Boost.” It is not for generative AI, but it is an AI feature listed in the specs. Also note that the MBM715 supports CBRS (3.5 GHz), which is [...]

The answer is *not*: Keep Android open.

Do not give in to the Stockholm syndrome.

Google controls Android. Google wants full control. Move totally away from Android and Google, and break free.

Move towards mobile Linux on your phone (and other devices).
