#Systemd: the modern #Linux engine that sparked one of the biggest controversies
https://gadgetflux.eu/ce-este-systemd-si-de-ce-e-controversat/
@roland @Binder It was profound foresight in the mid-70s to design software for an operating system that would not even be conceived of, let alone released, until at least a decade later.
That requires developing functional understanding of a future project without anyone first conceiving or conceptualizing it, a truly innovative approach that upends conventional applications of feasible reality.
This will be taught in #ComputerScience theory courses for generations to come.
I'm the solo dev behind Hammer: a #FOSS app for writing novels and the worlds they live in.

Welcome to this week’s The Programmer’s Fulcrum.
It’s your weekly curation of the essential news in the Open Media Network and Open Social development communities with a focus on devastating big tech via Techno Anarchism.
As usual, we aim to provide actionable content you can use to destroy Techno Feudalism each week. It has the additional benefit of weakening authoritarianism.
IMHO, the best way to do that is to use tools from the Techno Anarchist Manifesto to build your own site(s) to participate in the Open Media Network. Then you should share it (them) via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), the Fediverse, and possibly a newsletter or podcast. This approach is similar to what some call the IndieWeb and its POSSE philosophy.
The second best strategy is to have accounts on open social and use the hell out of them. And do the same with a RSS feed reader.
We publish TPF on Fridays so you can enjoy it over your weekend.
There’s good stuff in all of our categories, so please take the time to enjoy and bookmark the items most relevant to your goals. We hope you are inspired to create new ones.
Or you can scroll down to your favorite section.
FYI, my opinions will be in bold. And may involve cursing. Because humans. Especially tech bros. And fascists. Fuck´em.

I’ve had a front-row view to our collective institutions across both the private and public sector undergoing breath-taking mass psychosis.
This essay is an attempt to describe the bizarre dynamics that are currently at play and to reassure the people trying to survive amidst all of this that they are not crazy.
The reality is thus: the people in charge either have no plan, or see no path forwards other than keeping their heads down. Not at banks, not at hospitals, not in our government institutions.
The world’s organisations have been captured by people in the throes of frothing excitement, and saner people who now live in a state of constant commingled fear and frustration.

I hardened a systemd unit with RootDirectory= (chroot), PrivateTmp=true,
and NoExecPaths=/tmp. I thought this made /tmp non-executable.
systemd-analyze security also showed everything green.
Just to be sure, I copied a small test program into /tmp inside the unit
and tried to run it by hand. It ran — even though NoExecPaths=/tmp
should have blocked that.
The reason: a plain path in NoExecPaths= is relative to the host, not to
RootDirectory=, unless you add a "+" prefix. systemd.exec(5) does
document this, but it is easy to forget, and when you do, the mistake is
silent: /tmp still looks restricted, but is not. The fix is one
character: NoExecPaths=+/tmp.
systemd-analyze security cannot find this problem either. It only checks
if a directive is present in the config, not what it actually does at
runtime.
That is exactly why I built systemd-sandbox-check: so misconfigurations
like this do not go unnoticed. It starts a transient unit with the same
[Service] settings as your real unit and actually tests around 25
hardening directives at runtime — ProtectHome, PrivateDevices,
RestrictAddressFamilies, CapabilityBoundingSet, and more:
[FAIL] no_exec_paths (NoExecPaths): copy of interpreter outside
ExecPaths= EXECUTED -- allowlist not enforced
It is a single static binary, no dependencies, and exits non-zero on
FAIL, so it works as a CI check.

Due to my occupation, I travel to different locations for work within a period of time. Currently, I have two laptops: one for work and one for personal use. My personal laptop runs Fedora 44, while the work laptop is installed with Windows 10 LTSC. However, my personal laptop is quite large and heavy, making it impractical to carry both devices with me all the time. That said, I can’t manage browsing the web or writing personal logs on a Windows machine. It just doesn’t feel right for me, given my privacy-conscious mindset.
With the need to travel for work and only having one laptop to rely on, I’ve been experimenting with Tails - a Linux distribution that runs off a USB stick - as a daily driver when I’m far from home. I’ve heard about this distribution for a long time, specifically with the goal of leaving no traces on the laptop once the USB is unplugged.
Yes, I know that Tails is designed to be ephemeral and not intended for long-term use. However, most of the things I want to do aren’t illegal or suspicious. I’m just browsing the internet, reading articles, writing about my days, and watching some movies online.
Tails uses GNOME as its official and only desktop environment. As a Fedora user, this makes the situation easier for me. I use Fedora with plain GNOME but have an extension called Forge to handle tiling. I also created a script that uses gsettings to automate desktop configuration. So, I simply copied the script onto the USB, and run it when I open Tails. And voila! It feels just like home.
To keep my configuration across Tails sessions, I need persistent storage (which, again, goes against the core philosophy of the distro). I enable persistence along with the dotfiles option to retain my config. Then, I just copy the dconf directory into the dotfiles directory. With some testing, I’ve successfully retained my configuration across sessions. The only issue I haven’t figured out yet is how to keep the wallpapers. The default wallpaper (a blue screen) is kind of driving me crazy.
I also installed mpv to listen to my offline music library (stored on another encrypted USB). Tails comes with programs for normal usage, such as Tor Browser for the web, Thunderbird for email, LibreOffice as the office suite, and GIMP for photo editing. I mostly just use Tor, mpv, and vim, so that’s not a problem for me.
So far, so good! However, I’m afraid there might be other issues or aspects with Tails that I haven’t come across yet. If anyone has used Tails, please share your thoughts and experiences!

Debugging log from openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Script, my post-install setup tool for Tumbleweed:
Ran a full complete --auto pass on real hardware (hybrid Intel + RTX 4070 laptop) and hit three bugs that no dry-run or code review would have surfaced:
1. supergfxctl -m hybrid failing outright — the CLI expects Hybrid, capitalized. A one-character-class bug that silently broke GPU mode switching.
2. A daemon startup ordering issue: the script called supergfxctl before starting supergfxd, so the very first fix just traded one error for a worse one — the command hung indefinitely instead of failing fast, because the daemon parks a mode-change request waiting on a logout event that can't happen mid-install.
Also caught the install summary report flatly lying about its own PostgreSQL version — it always printed "17" regardless of what the version-detection logic actually installed.
All fixed, verified against real command output, and pushed.
