I think the time is right to follow Torvalds advice 😅 and finally "upgrade" my laptop to NetBSD.
I was trying to figure out whether to stick with stable or current, and also whether I should encrypt the entire disk or just /home and then the swap partition via rc.conf (if I understand correctly, that’s possible, right?).
Current is "solid" enough for daily use? Any advice? It's not my first time on NetBSD but I'm not an expert 😆
Found these tutorial online:

With Microsoft (M/S) being a huge contributor to the Linux Foundation (LF), we all know M/S will never support fully open file formats..
What needs to happen is all governments need to mandate 100% Open Standards like they did with POSIX.
We also know the US will never do that, but I had hopes for the EU. Seems the EU want M/S money instead.

Every few years there is yet another attempt :) - NextBSD is revived again. https://nextbsd.org #bsd #darwin #xnu
Nun kommt #FreeBSD dran.
Okay, so much for thinking I escaped unscathed, any one else having any issues with GNOME lib issues after upgrading to FreeBSD 15.1? Yes, I run KDE Plasma, but I also run some GNOME apps on KDE... #FreeBSD #BSD #Slackware #Linux

• Resumo rápido do trecho:
• BSD: permite...

🧑💻 FreeBSD Laptop Support Continues Improving With WiFi, GPU & Audio Driver Work - Phoronix
「 FreeBSD developers have been working on porting the Linux 6.13 DRM state and is now under review. There is also a Linux 6.14 port that's been worked on as well. In turn their next milestone is moving to the Direct Rendering Manager state from the current Linux 6.18 LTS base. 」

@bryan im not sure if llm is being used at this point don't care. its just a tool. im still using #linux and #bsd and if they use llm ill accept the risk.
there's quite the difference between johnny-engineer using llm and johnny-twitch-simp using llm one-shots.
where i draw the line is when the rads come in and shamed be for being interested in this stuff.

All of the major #BSDs allow AI code. Even #OpenBSD. https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware#operating-systems
In light of all the horror stories of vibe coders getting hacked, this seems really really really bad for security. I don't know what OS to use now.
To me, it seems clear that the reason that #Linux has more activity and driver support than the #BSD distros is because of copyleft and reciprocity - two aspects of "social justice" that protected contributors from their code being used without giving back.
I wrote about this a while ago: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2026/04/08/ai-code-is-hollowing-out-open-source-and-maintainers-are-looking-the-other-way.html but it feels like with the advent of #AI people are willing to look the other way to access the technical contributions of people who never consented to their works being infringed.
@catraxx the same way #OpenSolaris and #BSD survived the #Unix crash…
It looks like a perfect time to start checking thinkpad compatibility rating with different BSD flavors, and HaikuOS.
Reminds me of one of those embroidery thingy sewing machines my (at the time) new girlfriend said wasn't usable anymore... So I installed Win95c on an old beater lappy I picked up for $10 at the TRW Swap meet, and Voila! that dang thing sprang back to life.
Since then we've seen Win10 and TPM 1.2, followed by TPM 2.0 w/literally Millions upon millions of computers so obsolete they must be sent to the landfills (according to the insinuations of Microsoft) - exactly the same scenario you've just described, except that it's mainstream productivity devices and not IoT infra.
Gawd I loathe Windows - I'm so glad that nobody runs it anymore.
