Anyway, here the idea.
I'm finishing to set up my machine in a way I can test gaming under Linux and FreeBSD with different setup. Because X11 from Xdesktop is abandoned (in sort), I think to do comparison instead with Xlibre and Wayland, both with FreeBSD and Linux.
I could pick also X11 if somebody wish, just to check how the gap has growth in comparison of Xlibre.
Something tells me that FreeBSD ha some ace here, if Luanti is giving an hint.

So I defied my sciatic nerve (it is not happy with me) and picked some wild strawberries inside the compound, plus I grabbed some oregano to dry for the winter.

I also remembered I have an old netbook and booted it up to see if it was operational. Discovered it's already running Ubuntu! Version 16.04 (snort). Pondering whether I'll upgrade to Mint or go for Zorin, since it has a Mac-like interface option 🤔

Just a typical Wednesday over here.

Linux ported to Sega’s Mega Drive

If you have a Sega Mega Drive, you obviously want to run Linux on it. That's something you can do now. You do need to have an EverDrive, but don't worry, the port in question contains a custom fork of Qemu for those of us that don't.

I don't know what else to say, other than I wonder why nobody did this sooner.

Let's sums up.
Red Hat wants make believe you that X11 is a lost cause, but they want push a regression as concept from Unix standpoint, breaks the work of everybody else, and is linux-centric that spits in the face of any other OS like BSD.

All pretending to ignore that X11 splits the video server and window maker in two, the server could be replaced without breaking the works of everybody else, like OpenBSD does with Xenocara for themselves.

Im Netz kursieren Exploits für eine kürzlich gepatchte Sicherheitslücke im Linux-Kernel, die populäre Distributionen wie Ubuntu, Debian und Red Hat betrifft. Angreifer können damit ihre Zugriffsrechte ausweiten und Code als Root zur Ausführung bringen. Ein Patch wurde zwar schon Mitte Juni in den Linux-Kernel aufgenommen, ein entsprechendes Update steht aber wohl noch nicht für alle Systeme zur Verfügung

Dann spielt mal rasch die sicherheitsaktualisierungen ein… oder kompiliert euch einen neuen kernel, wenn eure distri noch nix hat und ihr nicht von jedem dahergelaufenen häckkind gepwnt werden wollt.

🐧 Als plötzlich Schluss war...

Vor wenigen Tagen besuchte ich wieder einmal OpenOS.at – eine Webseite, die ich seit vielen Jahren immer wieder gern genutzt habe. Statt der gewohnten Startseite erschien jedoch nur noch ein kurzer Hinweis:

„Diese Webpräsenz wurde am 26. Juni 2026 (nach 12 Jahren Betrieb) eingestellt.“

Damit endet nach zwölf Jahren ein Projekt, das für viele Linux- und BSD-Interessierte eine feste Anlaufstelle war.

Das erste Bild zeigt die frühere Startseite von OpenOS.at – mit aktuellen Distributionen, Nachrichten, Statistiken und Veranstaltungen aus der Welt freier Betriebssysteme. Das zweite Bild zeigt, was heute davon übrig geblieben ist.

Warum OpenOS eingestellt wurde, wissen wir bisher nicht. Vielleicht gibt es persönliche Gründe, vielleicht fehlte die Zeit oder Unterstützung. Vielleicht fand sich einfach niemand, der das Projekt weiterführen wollte. Solange es keine offizielle Erklärung gibt, sollten wir darüber nicht spekulieren.

Mich bringt das jedoch zum Nachdenken.

Viele von uns nutzen täglich freie Software, Webseiten, Foren oder Dienste. Wir freuen uns über aktuelle Informationen, hilfreiche Programme und funktionierende Server – oft ganz selbstverständlich und kostenlos.

Doch hinter all dem stehen Menschen.

Menschen, die ihre Freizeit investieren. Menschen, die Server betreiben, Inhalte pflegen, Fehler beheben, Updates einspielen und Fragen beantworten. Oft über viele Jahre hinweg und meist ehrenamtlich.

Gerade Projekte, die von einer einzelnen Person oder einem kleinen Team getragen werden, leisten Erstaunliches. Gleichzeitig sind sie aber auch besonders verletzlich. Wenn die Motivation nachlässt, das Privatleben mehr Zeit fordert oder gesundheitliche Gründe dazukommen, kann selbst ein langjähriges Projekt plötzlich enden.

Vielleicht erinnert uns das Ende von OpenOS daran, dass Open Source und freie Communities vom Mitmachen leben.

Nicht nur nutzen.

Nicht nur konsumieren.

Sondern auch einmal Danke sagen, Fehler melden, Dokumentationen schreiben, anderen helfen, einen kleinen Betrag spenden oder selbst mit anpacken.

Denn genau davon lebt unsere Gemeinschaft.

Ich möchte mich deshalb heute bei allen bedanken, die im Hintergrund dafür sorgen, dass freie Projekte überhaupt existieren – egal ob Entwickler, Administratoren, Übersetzer, Autoren oder Community-Mitglieder.

Ihr macht das Internet ein Stück besser. ❤️

Long story short, I installed an update yesterday that has locked me out of my machine, at least in any usable form. All files are seemingly intact, but I can't even input anything properly now and I think my install is a loss. I just want to get my files back so I can reinstall Mint or another OS. I did choose to encrypt my drive on install, which isn't a problem so long as I have a place to input the password… Which I don't anymore.

I am currently running elementaryOS from a USB stick, trying to see if I can somehow access anything from THERE. Any help is greatly appreciated. <3

So since Kronos PC, the-steam-machine-clone-but-not-really-that-looks-like-an-abstract-alienware, is fully stable and plays all my games flawlessly (technically Helldivers 2 has stopped working but that’s besides the point), and such it’s incredibly unlikely she’ll be stripped down now - I’ve added the stickers I wanted to decorate the machine with!

This does make it the first device I’ve owned that I’ve added stickers to. :3

A photo of Kronos PC, a custom build I did a few weeks ago to supplement my workstation pc and is running Bazzite Linux. She now has 5 stickers. The ones are the front are a sticker of the word “girls” printed in all caps 3 times on top of each other in the lesbian flag colours, and a black and yellow sticker that looks like the Y2K stickers found on late 90s PCs except this one has 2038 as the year. The 3 on the side has been arranged to avoid obscuring seeing the parts inside the case; these stickers are a SCP memetic warning sticker, a fluffy fox tail in the demigirl flag colours, and a meme drawing of a friend’s fursona. The background is a red wall with the blue of the trans flag to the far right. To the left is a bit of Evie’s screen. A white IKEA desk which the PC sits on top on. The minisforum Evie was previously using to play her games (somewhat ineffectively) is also in frame as she hasn’t gotten around putting it away yet, and on the far bottom left if the frame is a small corner or Evie’s tablet.
