I gave Kubuntu a try on my old desktop but it was very buggy, particularly video playback from my NAS with VLC. I'd really like to run KDE however, so as a last ditch effort I'm giving Fedora 44's KDE edition a try. I hope that works out!

Compromised npm Packages in the AsyncAPI Namespace Deliver Miasma Botnet Loader

Four npm packages in the AsyncAPI namespace were compromised to distribute a multi-stage botnet loader called Miasma. The attack utilized trusted GitHub Actions publishing but originated from a poisoned source commit. Malicious code was injected into legitimate source files that execute when imported, launching a detached Node.js process to download an 8.25 MB encrypted payload from IPFS. The final payload is a sophisticated tasking framework supporting multiple command-and-control channels including REST, Nostr relays, IPFS, Ethereum smart contracts, and BitTorrent DHT. The framework establishes persistence via systemd services on Linux and fake NodeJS directories, supporting file operations, shell execution, data collection, and cross-ecosystem propagation capabilities for npm, PyPI, RubyGems, and Cargo ecosystems.

I know of "don't fix what ain't broke" and "use what works for you". I'm well aware of it. I'm fine with both. I'm pretty adaptable, but maybe I'm just having fond memories with x11.

When I really thought about it though.. I don't even know why I switched to wayland, kde specifically. My i3wm still works flawlessly. While KDE has very teeny tiny problems, I still like it.

Y'know that feeling when you have two girlfriends who like you and are still friendly to each other even though you can only choose to spend time with one. That's what it feels. On one hand you got someone who's facing forward, looks to the future, who wants to bring the best out of you, and on the other hand, you got someone who's chill and she's chill whoever you pick, but the modern one is also chill when you pick the legacy one. Argh..

This is the problem of liking both.. I'm comfortable with both. I wanna spend time with both but I can only spend time with one...

#Microsoft does generate a unique "Global Device ID" #GDID. This is not the bad news as all/most systems do have those (Linux: "man machine-id").

The issue at hand is that Microsoft is transmitting that GDID with many network transmissions of yours and you can't prevent that from happening.

Using that ID, the FBI identified bad guys that were using VPN for their felonies.

While catching really bad guys is always a plus, it also proved that your privacy is ignored while #surveillance is maximized when your activities may always be tracked down to your unique Windows ID.
