Change of plans: I didn’t end up waiting for the upcoming Minisforum MS-03 Workstation after all, but instead decided on the ASUS NUC16 PRO on a whim.

The reason was that Wendell from Level1Techs really praised this NUC in his latest video. He also highlighted the great Linux support from both Intel and ASUS. I’ve linked the video below.

And unlike many Chinese manufacturers, you can easily find all the drivers on their support pages (both Intel and ASUS)—including those for Linux! Plus, the download servers are fast, unlike with the Chinese manufacturers...

It has 32 GB of RAM, but unfortunately it’s soldered onto the motherboard on this model—though it does offer faster speeds.

I had to buy the NVMe drive separately; I opted for a 1 TB WD Black SN850X. Since I store everything on the NAS, I need virtually no storage space on the computer itself—just enough for the operating system; 256 GB would be more than enough. But a larger NVMe drive means more speed and a longer lifespan.

Other specs: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, ASRock B390, 2x TB4, 2x 2.5-inch, 4x USB-A 10G, 1x USB-C 10G, 2x HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, two M.2 Gen5/Gen4 slots. It’s a breeze!

So, let’s install Linux on it! (To be on the safe side and to ensure the best possible support, it’ll be Fedora again...)

Local LLMs on Raspberry Pi are shifting from novelty to practical privacy tool. Qwen3 running on a Pi 5 with 16GB RAM gives offline inference with zero data leakage - ideal for homelab automation scripts, local chatbots, or private code assistance. No cloud dependency, no API costs, fully offline.

a funny story: few days ago someone raised an issue in BlueZ that mirrored what I discovered 3 years ago (BT Mesh packets aren't being sent with kernel 6.2.x and newer) then posted a code analysis

comment struck as weird, e.g saying "not kernel version-specific" yet actually confirming it's version-specific

then I reached last paragraph: "For transparency: I used AI assistance (Claude) to help dig through the BlueZ and kernel source"

My next move will be to automatically mount Samba shares on boot in macOS, so that I can make use of all the extra storage on the 8TB hard drive that's connected to the system. for mega-yonks i have avidly followed heapsa hashtags [as a linux user & enjoyer] plus various tags [as someone somewhat bsd-curious but quite overwhelmed by it conceptually & practically]. am now thinking of unfollowing said bsd tags, coz seeing all the posts from all the clever peeps using it with all their incomprehensible commands & concepts, rather than inspiring me is kinda sorta more demoralising & overwhelming me

also, there's just no point me ignoring the fact that i bloody well love using my various linux systems, & hafta be honest with myself that the chances of me ever seriously embarking on learning then using another paradigm now are pretty damn slender

so, unfollowing said bsd tags seems logical & pragmatic

                                                        and yet...

...it also feels cowardly & lazy

ergo ever more i continue walking around in an endless circle on a cold distant planet, locked in a logic loop, the very robot of which asimov wrote

In the interest of not eroding Debian's reputation or further damaging the community, LLM-assisted contributions should be prohibited from inclusion in Debian.

Though our position is that LLM contributions are contrary to documents already ratified by Debian, in order to remove all doubt, we propose the following addition to the Social Contract:

6. Works Created through the use of Large Language Models (LLMs)

We will not
allow direct contributions to Debian written with the use or assistance of large
language models (LLMs) or other generative AI tools. Direct contributions are
defined as packaging, native Debian software like lintian, documentation and
translations written by Debian contributors, and official Debian web resources,
etc. Other categories such as upstream projects written with LLM assistance may
be included at a later date. This ensures that Debian remains a stable, trusted,
and reliable operating system, and protects the interests of the Debian
volunteers who make it possible.
