Btw. the various keys (Escape, Meta, Alt, Control, Shift) are only the default key bindings of #Emacs. There is e.g. evil-mode, which emulates vi. Or hel, which emulates helix. And probably a dozen more. People can use the emulation most compatible with their remote connection.

#gnome was always been a #microsoft hidden attempt to destroy #GTK and
libre software in order to be a test base for its technologies (C#
it's the best case). GTK it's doomed. Forever. It's just a #Gnome/MS
backend today to test touch interfaces and semi-native #Javascript
desktop software, you are basically betatesting
modern #Microsoft software desktop with it.

#KDE/#Plasma it's just a test suite for #qt5/#qt6
in order to get professional developers for QT which is very propietarily
supported.

Now, the only true libre environment from these corporations left
could be #GNUStep, the *original* supposted-to-be
#GNU desktop environment, not GNOME.

It might look old, rusty, forgotten, sightly enhanced NeXTStep/OpenStep
clone AKA #OSX's dad, but it can look a bit modern with some themes.

This is from the 2010's I think, so it's kinda 'retro' today,
but far better than the default NeXT theme from the 90's.

A least you will be sure that no one would need to adapt it
for coporation purposes.

There's even an #Emacs GNUStep UI port for it, which is for sure the base
for all the Emacs out there for #MacOS.

#Emacs users typically do not run Emacs on a remote host. It's not necessary. We can edit remote files on our local Emacs instance, thanks to #TRAMP. Which allows things like #ediff two configuration files on two remote servers etc.

That's certainly true, but moreover you _have the option_ to learn and use Lisp as well _and_ to _gain a lot_ from that _in addition to_ the rest.

And then access to executing Lisp programs is highly integrated with the rest.
For example, you can insert an Emacs Lisp fragment into a plain text buffer (a text file opened for editing) and execute it right there with a trivial command.
It can change the same buffer or it can do a lot of other things.

And it goes on.

Sometime I wonder, how did people start to compare emacs with vi? Indeed it is true that vi and emacs are both text editors.

But in a sense, emacs is an editor and much more. Are these two computer programs even comparable to begin with?

Just like what you wrote, emacs acts like vi. But emacs also acts like tmux. It is also acting like a shell and more.

Comparing emacs with vi is like comparing emacs with python or java or perl.
