Starting the week with a good deed — to myself!

Liked to have the latest #jabberEl 0.11.1 on #Debian 13 #trixie stable, so I uploaded it to #backports.

Should be installable in a few hours:

$ sudo apt install -t trixie-backports elpa-jabber

At this point, using #Jabber/#XMPP or other free and federated IMs is the second best thing we can do against #ChatControl in the #EU. The best is to write to our #MEPs before Wednesday. Do both!

Ich nutze #Jabber/#XMPP mit gateways zu IRC, Matrix und SMS. Gateways zu geschlossenen Systemen (Whatsapp, Signal, Telegram) wären möglich, will ich aber nicht 😉

IRC gateway (#Biboumi) nutze ich von #Movim, aber die Matrix- und SMS-Gateways hoste ich nur mich selbst, obwohl's zumindest das Gateway für Matrix auch schon bei Movim gibt. Historisch gewachsen 🤷

Als Clients nutze ich #Gajim, #Dino und neuerdings auch #jabberEl in #Emacs.

Thanks to a suggestion from @hmelman (thanks!), I now have #Emacs bookmarks playing nicely with save-place-mode, which several people suggested as a way to save position in all files, not just bookmarked ones. But it requires a little elisp to get books to place nice with save-place. I've updated the blog article:

So glad that MELPA is getting a new versioning scheme, such that all ELPA snapshot archives become compatible. Snapshot package versions have the form release.0.date.count, starting with the version number of the last release.

Such an interesting read! A tragedy in -1 parts: an attempt to push slop-patches into the #GNU #Emacs codebase, fortunately failed

I saw this attempt in the Emacs mailling list, but didn't draw much attention to it — like, LMAO, one more vibecoded patch in the endless stream of e-mails, pretending that it was made with accuracy, attention to details, care and understanding of internals it was changing.

Times passed and in my Fediverse timeline suddenly popped the blogpost from the "author" of the before-mentioned slop-patch: https://xlii.space/eng/honesty-gets-emacs-patch-rejected/ (from some bot with Lobste.rs links). I opened it and realized that things were much worse

Obvious thing, which relates almost to the all vibecoders, were in place — I speaking about some kind of "Silicon Valley big corpo boss mentality" — when you interested only in result and don't care about the process. I pretty sure, if some genie made possible to just snap the fingers and the software you want just appears on the your desk — then all the vibecoders of the world will be thrilling from happiness. Such people didn't understand and possibly will never understand that someone may have some fun from the process, not only from result

In case of Emacs the "don't care" part was in bruteforcing the LLM-generated patches with benchmarks, while the measured (I hope, the benchmarks were correctly specified) values become the expected. Yeah, looks like this is how they (vibecoders) massacred my boy (CS and CE) — now literally the millions of electrical monkeys smashing the typewriters' keyboards while they will produce the Tolstoy's "War and Peace" — instead of deep, concise understanding of the subject.

We can easily use ed inside a terminal emulator on emacs. And it is totally normal to do that.

When the universe was still young, immortals commonly used emacs as a terminal multiplexer where they could do their unixy things on emacs.

What I did now and works for me:

1. Created two files "header.org" and "footer.org", which has all static content. I only had to declare a #dinbrief class in org-latex-classes.

2. Header contains three macros:

#+MACRO: to @@latex:\begin{letter}{$1}@@
#+MACRO: subject @@latex:\subject{$1}@@
#+MACRO: opening @@latex:\opening{$1,}@@

3. Then I just write my letter in a normal #orgmode file with #+INCLUDE at top and bottom.

org-latex-export-to-pdf, done.
