RE: cyberpunk.lol/@mxchara/1171016

There's an easy explanation for why xwayland is semi-broken: hostile engineering. @bragefuglseth was trying to advertise for the @XOrgFoundation but they're responsible for BOTH and , so if X11 back-compatibility with Wayland is defective, then they probably WANT it to be defective. This is typical sector "planned obsolescence".

Because the geeklords are all salivating over the new thing and want it to be FORCED on people (so they can start profiting faster from the new thing) they make sure the old thing, which is still perfectly useful and in fact has a massive user-base, is sabotaged.

One again I must stress that I doubt whether any developer in the space is actively cackling with glee about leaving end-users out in the cold...except, I must inform @bragefuglseth and @XOrgFoundation, that's EXACTLY how snobby and people talk about users when they're even the least bit angry or peeved that they're not being taken seriously, as the grand creators and benefactors that they always imagine themselves to be.

Decided to color the cowbuttons with my usual Gruvbox color scheme. I think that looks better than the plain white text? Should have titled this "Look Mum no Waybar." 🤪

A screenshot of the cow window manager desktop. There is a pager at the top left of the screen showing all 10 desks. Desk 0 has two terminals and qutebrowser open. In the middle at the top is the full date and time displayed in a cowbutton and to the right five cowbuttons displaying keyboard language, screen idle status, laptop brightness, volume control and laptops battery charge status. The cowbuttons have different colored text using the gruvbox theme.

I've not even used as I decided to use what was available in the field of cow aka cowbuttons and cowpager. I think I'm regressing back to the 90's. 🤣

The bad news: pasting a several-kilobyte-long single-line string into Konsole doesn't work. It gets truncated.

The good news: I can still pipe it into other programs using wl-paste.

I've a dumb question to ask users past and present. Currently I'm setting up my ( for ) and have never really used fvwm. I'm going to set up my pager and possibly some buttons plus a few scripts. Now comes the question.
What do you do with those windows ?
Do you put them in a reserved area that other windows can't overlap? Or do you position them with a rule and just treat them like normal windows so other windows could effectively be on top of them when maximized, meaning you'd have to raise your pager or buttons again to see them?
I did warn you it's a dumb question but thanks in advance for your explanations of how you run fvwm and bonus points for your screenshots. ❤️

What we've settled on personally, for now, is on CachyOS Linux, which we hadn't gotten working with previously but which seems to be working fine now after a system reformat, and on FreeBSD. There's considerable virtue in the dead-simple twm approach although we may tire of the lack of elaboration. Unfortunately all our attempts to get Wayland working with the FreeBSD Nvidia DRM drivers have failed so we're puttering along with X11.

Based on the image renderer code already in CoW, I've now written an XPM3-compatible parser to support XPM images.

I was in two minds about this, but I also didn't want to depend on libxpm for this.

What I have works, and will be mostly useful for menu icons, application icons, etc. The "wm-icons" package still produces XPM files, and I'm already using some of those in cow.

What is cow? It's a window manager for Linux/*BSD written on top of the wayland compositor:

it's taken us too long to get back to this point: poking away at programming from Common (cmucl in this case) using the CLX library. This image captured from our CachyOS Linux system running LXQt + labwc Wayland desktop environment.

But that brings up the question: we spent a couple years in college plugging away at learning X11 programming with the help of those massive O'Reilly books back in the 1990s. 1990s computer books tended to be written to a far more literate standard than is usual in the tech sector of today (generative fanboys probably hope to get away without even knowing how to read) so it was relatively painless despite the somewhat tedious nature of the X11 APIs.

So...does anything like this exist for ? Are there books that are any good? I'd like to know in particular whether it's at all possible to create non-rectangular windows.
