Sometimes I like to think of OpenBSD development as a form of spiritual discipline. The project is a decades-long painstaking labor of love with hackers carefully rearranging source code by hand. In Dutch you’d call this monnikenwerk. So what better place could there be for a hackathon than an actual monastery?

I'm running a Go server (`go ...`, listens on localhost:8080) and I want to make it a proper service (basically restart when down, autostarts on reboot)

what are the proper steps? should ask elsewhere?

Highly recommend trying out #OpenBSD on an old Thinkpad. 👍🏼

My mail server is in crash, the smtpd cannot deliver mail, tried reinstall dovecot, cannot start it back.

Some people having issues with fd limits too (yes of course, I included the additional limits to login.conf) ?

fd limit (ulimit -n) is lower than required under max. load (128 < 1000), because of default_client_limit

Support for the loongson platform has been retired in #OpenBSD -current and has now been unhooked from the build. 7.9 is the last release for this platform.

And just to be clear to anyone unfamiliar with OpenBSD: no, the project itself does not use CloudFlare. The domain is not using the CF nameservers, nor are they being proxied by those scumbags.

This only applies to the CF mirror at cloudflare.cdn.openbsd.org.

And I have no clue why this is happening. This connection does not expose any services, nor is there any kind of abuse coming from it. But moreover: I don't care.

When does a UPS/gateway race condition happen? When you are lots of kms from the office, of course…
So, I learned how to solve the race condition correctly using #nut and #OpenBSD with my #Eaton UPS (strongly recommended 'cos they don't cloudy cloud and speak USB or serial perfectly).
The problem statement is simple:

* UPS on battery
* shutdown initiated
* shutdown completes
* power returns before UPS is a 0%
* gateway machine remains happily off because there is no up/down on the power
* you are far from the office and there is nobody to press the power button on the gateway for you.

The solution I worked out with documentation and searches (thank you @kagihq ) is:

upsmon detects FSD (low battery / POWERDOWNFLAG trigger)
-> creates POWERDOWNFLAG file (e.g. /var/run/killpower)
-> executes SHUTDOWNCMD ("shutdown -p now")
-> OS shuts down processes, remounts FS read-only
-> /etc/rc.shutdown runs
-> checks: upsmon -K (exits 0 if POWERDOWNFLAG exists)
-> calls: upsdrvctl shutdown
-> starts a fresh driver instance: usbhid-ups -a eaton -k
-> driver sends "shutdown.return" to UPS
-> UPS timer starts (ups.delay.shutdown seconds)
-> OS completes power-off via ACPI
-> UPS cuts load output
-> (mains may already be back)
-> UPS restores load on mains presence
-> BIOS "boot on power restore" fires

#password and #passphrase generators are a staple in our modern world. there's many implementations in different #frameworks that will generate complex output with #entropy calculation.

i decided to build my own. i call it #gopass it's built on #golang and will have build targets for #freebsd #openbsd #linux and maybe #macos (not sure i care enough yet).

this took about 20 minutes to wire up initially with a base implementation. what's taken a couple of weeks to nail down is the ui and more so the entropy calculation which has too many deltas to be super-realistic.

anyways, like the #unix #philosophy of doing one thing very well, this tool follows that tried and true pattern.

@pertho i'm with you on that. mix it with #freebsd or #openbsd and you have yourself a quiet sanctuary.

also a nice benefit as i'm confident you're aware is the bandwidth savings. no piles of js/font bundles to pull in. just text and maybe an image asset if it's linked and your #newsboat setup will parse it.

Downgraded my OpenBSD setup (both base and pkgs) back again... I wasn't able to update ungoogled_chromium in current anymore due to some unmet/looped dependencies, so I went back to the plain release with no hassle and everything works again.

My best regards to all the folks in the BSD communities out there and everyone actively working on the BSDs. Good job! All your work is very appreciated here on my end .🫶

one of the nice things i see in the #bsd community especially here at bsd cafe, is how the community is helpful and often puts aside their fundamental differences (ie politics, religion, etc) for the greater good of the ecosystem.

we have people from all walks of life getting along (mostly) whereas its been my experience other ecosystems focus a bit too much on coc and gating as opposed to the technology.

this is not a stance of superiority but an observation that keeps me at the cozy table sipping cofe.

choose different. choose bsd.
